“Is it 1% already?”
We’ve all been there. You’re miles away from the nearest wall outlet, the sun is setting, and your phone starts blinking red. For me, it happened last winter during a hike in the backwoods of Ohio. My GPS died, and for a solid hour, I was just a guy wandering in the cold with a very expensive glass brick in my pocket.
That was the last time I traveled “naked.”
Nowadays, my backpack might be missing a clean pair of socks, but it never misses a solid power bank. It’s not just about charging a phone to scroll through Instagram; it’s about the peace of mind.
Whether I’m capturing the morning fog on a mountain peak or just trying to find my way back to a remote Airbnb in a city I can’t pronounce, having that extra juice is a game changer.

What I look for in my gear isn’t fancy lights or “smart” gimmicks. I need two things:
- Ruggedness: If I drop it on a rock, I want the rock to be worried, not the charger.
- Raw Speed: I don’t want to be tethered to a cable for three hours. Give me that fast-charge “hit” and let me get back to the adventure.
At the end of the day, we invest in these gadgets so they can work for us—not the other way around. Technology should empower your journey, not limit it.
What’s the one piece of gear you never leave home without? Let me know in the comments.
